Biography

In 1990 Paul Anciaux became Master of Political and Social Sciences at the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium. He completed his military service in 1991. He started his professional career in 1991 working for the Belgian branch of the multinational pay-television company, FilmNet (later: Canal+), where he was responsible for purchase management. In 1999 he continued his career as Purchase Manager, working for Intec, a company near Louvain which specialised in socio-medical software, and followed this with a brief period in 2001 with the pharmaceuticals company Nycomed-Christiaens in Brussels. In September 2001 he joined the European Commission, Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry. Until 15 May 2012 he was the policy officer responsible for the EU non-energy extractive industries. Paul was a driving force behind the development of the EU’s raw material policy (i.e. the “EU Raw Materials Initiative”). During several years he also acted as Vice-President of the International Lead & Zinc Study Group and Chairman of the Environmental & Economics Committee of the International Nickel Study Group. Since 16 May 2012 Paul has become Policy Officer responsible for the Defence Industries. Within the area of the defence sector, Paul is covering, in particular, all actions in support of SMEs, clusters, regions as well as access to raw materials. He manages the activities of the European Network of Defence-related Regions.

Biography

Professor Daniel Berckmans has a Master’s degree in Bio-Engineering and a Ph D in ‘Controlling Biological Systems’. He has worked at KU Leuven for 35 years as a full-professor, teaching and doing research. He was leading a big research team in ‘real-time modelling of individual living organisms: humans and animals’. He is recognized worldwide as the spiritual father of the field of Precision Livestock Farming: real-time monitoring of livestock. Since 2001, half of the research team worked on human applications: real-time monitoring in intensive care unit, stress monitoring, physical condition monitoring, etc. He is co-author in over 300 peer reviewed scientific publications and over 400 conference papers. Since 1981 he has experience in product development, the research team has co-developed 17 products with industrial partners, which went to the world market booth. He has coordinated several EU projects, the last one with a budget of 8 M€ and 20 partners in which 4 new spin-off companies were started as part of the project. Beside this, he co-started 2 spin-off companies on real-time monitoring of individuals. He is co-inventor of 20 patents. He is still teaching and supporting research at University for 1 day/week and is closer involved in BioRICS 4 days/week as CTO and Chairman of the Board.

Biography

Since November 2017, Isabelle Desjeux is the European Affairs manager at the Strategy, Innovation & Technologies Directorate of Safran Electronics & Defense. Prior, Isabelle has been working for 6 years as Coordinator for Industry Relations & Support and Principal Officer Market and Industry Policy at the European Defence Agency in Brussels, Belgium. Between 2003 and 2011 she has held the position of European project manager at R&T directorate of Division Optronics and Defense of Sagem DS. After a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, awarded in the US in 1995, she started a career in France at DGA (Ministry of Armies) in 1996 holding in several positions until 2003, all of them being European affairs related. At the same time, she graduated with a CNAM MBA in 2002.

Biography

Mr. Juusti has held various positions in the Finnish Defence Administration, especially at the Defence Command level. He has also served at the Mission of Finland to NATO and has held the NADREP (EU/NATO/WEAG) position in Brussels from 1999 to 2003. From January 2008 until the end of 2010, he also held the position of Armaments Director at the European Defence Agency (EDA). In February 2012, Major General Juusti retired from active service and from the Finnish Defence Command where he acted as Deputy Chief of Staff (Logistics and Armaments). From March 2012 until the end of 2015, Mr Juusti held the position of Director General of the Resource Policy Department and Finnish National Armaments Director (NAD). Mr. Juusti was appointed Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Defence of Finland 1st January 2016. He is also the Chair of the Security Committee

Ms. Tuija Karanko was appointed Secretary General of AFDA, the Association of Finnish Defence and Aerospace Industries in 2010. Before this, Ms. Karanko had a long career within the Finnish public administration working as the Ministerial Advisor at the Ministry of Defence and, previously, for the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry where she mainly focused on international relations. She has held several positions at the Finnish Defence Forces Joint Command and other Defence Forces’ agencies dealing mostly with international relations and Finland’s participation in NATO’s Partnership for Peace program. Ms Karanko has a degree in Political Science from the University of Jyväskylä where she majored in Political Science.

Marina Martínez is Programme Officer of CDTI (Centro de Desarrollo Tecnológico e Industrial – Spanish Innovation Agency) in Brussels (Spanish Office for Science and Technology, SOST-CDTI office). She is National Contact Point of the Secure Societies Challenge in H2020 and she also has given support to the Ministry of Defense in the Preparatory Action for Defence Research of the European Union. Dr Martínez is conducting the activities of the SOST offices addressed to the Spanish regions as well to the Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs) opportunities on R&D and Innovation. She is the coordinator of the capacity building and specialisation programme in H2020. These activities are addressed to all kind of Spanish participants in Framework Programme. Previously she has worked in the industry on Earth Observation applications and products and in Satellite navigation (GNSS and EGNOS). She has been permanent lecturer at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) during 12 years and, lately, she has been deputy director of the former Geomatics Research Institute in Barcelona (UPC-Catalonia Government). Marina Martínez holds a PhD in Physic Sciences, has been researcher at the Technical University of Delft and invited researcher at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory of NASA. She was been awarded by the Cartographic Institute of Catalonia because her works in Geomatics. She has worked in the private sector in applications of Earth Observation Satellite data and images. Before joining SOST-CDTI, she has been researcher and participant in more twenty R&D and Innovation projects at European and international level.

Mr. Peeter Nieler has been an entrepreneur all his life with a broad range of areas such as publishing, film production, AI and electronics R&D. Mr. Nieler is also an active speaker, giving visiting lectures to students, talking at conferences (such as innovation conference “The Future Is Now”, Unity’s conference Unite Beijing, Opening speech at WVA2015 in Shanghai,FIVR in Helsinki, Latitude59, PowerSpeech at BNFF, ITEC in Rotterdam, Let’s CEE in Vienna, KVRF in Seoul, etc.) and various Virtual Reality meet-ups. He believes it is important to share experiences and to inspire others. He considers his strengths to be business development, team building and developing technology strategies. In particular, he feels inspired and valued in the creational Virtual Reality industry, in which he started to actively operate already in 2012, even before Oculus Rift started to popularize the field. Over the past few years he has led R&D in his startup Criffin, constantly pushing for new horizons in technology and science. During these years they have built prototypes for IMU based skeletal tracking, UltraSonic positional tracking and currently they are researching possibilities in haptic feedback solutions. Besides developing high tech embedded systems for VR, he is now delving into neuroscience and how the brain interacts with artificial realities.

José Prieto is an Aerospace Engineer who graduated from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (1994). He started his professional career in GMV as a project engineer being mainly involved in ESA Guidance, Navigation and Control projects. After some time, relocated at ESA working for the Interplanetary Mission Support Section, he assumed the lead of the International Programs Division. Since 2004 he is responsible for the Defense & Security Business Development in GMV. He has participated in many projects and study groups dealing with C4ISR systems in different environments such as the Spanish MoD, the European External Action Service, the European Defence Agency and NATO.

Harri Romppainen received his M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the Helsinki University of Technology in 1997, and Executive MBA in Strategic Management from the University of Oulu in 2007. Since 2013, Elektra Tsigaridas is Policy Officer at the European Commission, Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs. Working in the area of EU defence industrial policy she is responsible, in particular, for all actions in support of skills in defence. She manages the activities of the European Defence Skills Partnership. Elektra entered the European Commission in 2010 at the Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development managing EU-Latin America economic cooperation programmes in support of SMEs. Since 1997 and during the entire accession to EU period, Elektra worked as government official of the Republic of Slovenia in the area of coordination and communication of the EU accession process. From 2006 she worked in EU projects transferring know how to at that time EU candidate countries Croatia and Montenegro. Elektra holds Masters of Arts in Economics and in European Public Affairs and a degree in Sociology and Cultural Anthropology. She is fluent in English, Spanish, Greek, Slovenian, Croatian and Italian. She is a certified sommelier and besides good wine she enjoys opera, dancing and traveling.

Professor Vesa Virtanen is the director at the Kajaani University Consortium, a department of the University of Oulu. He is also the director of the unit of measurement technology, MITY. He holds a Ph.D. in chemistry. He has been visiting post-doctoral scientist at Universities in Germany and France and working as scientific officer at Joint Research Centre of European Commission in Belgium. He has vast experience in research work and has over 200 scientific publications. Research interests include: biosensor development for human physiological evaluation (well-being, sports and health care) and environmental research (natural waters and modern mining), bioanalytical methods for food processing and nutritional evaluation, modern instrumental analytical methods and measurement instruments.
